Your dog will start their foundation with exercises that emphasize independence, confidence, problem solving and hunting. We will introduce the dogs to searching for food hidden in open boxes and then use that tool to build foundation skills. In this live online class, the instructor will give you exercises to set up. You and your dog will perform the exercise live on camera during class. You’ll get to watch your classmates work their dogs too! Prerequisites: Dogs should be at least 6 months old. Tech requirements: - Zoom. Download here: https://zoom.us/download - Internet Connection - Must be able to support streaming the class and videoconferencing without buffering or dropping out. - Camera: A phone or laptop that can be positioned using a tripod or some other means to view the search area. - Wireless headphones so that you can hear instructions while you are working with your dog (away from your device). Other requirements - Training Space - Room such as a bedroom, living room, garage, etc that is large enough where you can make a circle with a roughly 8 foot diameter. You will also need to be able to place 6 boxes that are 6x12 inches with 2 feet separation between boxes. - 10+ open containers (amazon boxes, buckets, opaque tupperware, etc.). The container needs to be short and wide enough that the dog can put their head in to eat food from the box. - Several cups of small, high value treats (cubes of chicken, roast beef, etc.) - Other suggested items for class will vary from week to week and can usually be found around your home. Xpens are particularly useful for nose work. If you do not already have one, they are worth getting. In between turns your dog should have a quiet isolated place to rest and absorb the lesson - latent learning. Ideally, their usual house-crate in a quiet place, or a bedroom with a baby gate or door where they can relax. If there are any other dogs in the household, they should be separated and not allowed to watch or interfere with the dog’s lesson to ensure the best experience for the learner.
